ACHIEVEMENTS 

Canoeing

  • During 2009 Leeuwfontein Primary School ended up 1st in Gauteng Canoe Union school league!  At the 2009 Gauteng Sprint Championships the Academy took 14 out of a possible 31 medals.  The Academy won gold medals at he 2009 SA K4 Championships in the U12, 14 U16 and silver in the U18 category.  The Academy won the overall schools club competition in Gauteng.  Two of the paddlers in the Academy represented South Africa at the world Sprint Championships.
  • 2010 Achievement includes the following: three under 16 and 1 under 18 paddlers were selected to represent South Africa in Europe.  Two senior athletes were selected to represent South Africa in the world cup and world champion events.  These athletes are also part of the South African elite olympic training squad.  The senior paddlers also assist with the coaching of the juniors and serve as role models.     

 

  • During the 2010 SA Schools Championships 22 of the Academy juniors took part and won 12 medals.         

    

Academic

  • After school classes 2 X per week are facilitated by a qualified social worker.       
  • Partnership with Siyafunda Community Technology Centre to develop a computer lab with 25 computers

 

 

Social 

  • Kamcare, a social non-profit company assists with the welfare of children in the program. 
  • 4 three day camps were conducted focusing on leadership skills and cross cultural skills.    

 

 

Project to make facility and services available to people with disabilities     

  • The Academy in partnership with Kamcare, Unisa and Canoeing South Africa is in the process of establishing a programme to assist people with disabilities to participate in the sport of canoeing.
