Holiday Program
In plot 175 most parents are unemployed or has “piece work”, indicating that they work at different employees, different days of the week. Due to the parent’s poverty and the fact that they do not have a sustainable income they have to work during holidays when their children do not attend school. As a result the children has to keep themselves busy without any adult supervision. It is also not uncommon to find a 7 or 8 year old child looking after a 1 year old brother or sister. Since all the children stay in only one room shack’s there are not a lot to do and they get bored and roam the streets. This consequently leads to possible abuse.
To combat this phenomenon, Kamcare linked with other church groups and Non Profit Organisations in the community to present a holiday program to the children. The holiday program takes place in the local community hall. Currently the ‘Kids Games’ program is followed where a character from the Bible is used as a theme and all the activities are linked to the lessons that the Bible character had to learn in his/her own live.
The program takes the form of a mini Olimpics with lots of music, sport and fun.
