In plot 175 Kameeldrift and plot 111 Leeuwfontein most parents are unemployed or has “piece work”, indicating that they work at different employers, different days of the week. Due to the parents’s poverty and the fact that they do not have a sustainable income they have to work during holidays when their children do not attend school. As a result the children have to keep themselves busy and are without adult supervision. It is also not uncommon to find a 7 or 8 year old child looking after a 1 year old brother or sister. Since all the children stay in only one room shacks, there is not a lot to do and they get bored and roam the streets. This increases the probability of abuse and delinquency.
To combat this phenomenon, Kamcare is presenting a holiday program during the winter holidays every year. Currently the ‘Kids Games’ programme is followed where a relevant life theme is chosen and the Bible is incorporated by linking the theme with various relevant Bible characters or stories.
The program takes the form of a mini Olimpics with lots of music, sport and fun.
