Kamcare identified the need to start with reading interventions for children especially in the informal settlements at a early stage to influence the children's to give children that are under-developed a head-start in their learning experience compared to other children in the same circumstances.
Kamcare is using the Reading Eggs program, it is a online reading programme which is used worldwide and whereby children learn to read English through a well-structured programme of lessons made up of games. Each child is individually “subscribed” and works at her/his own pace in a one-on-one setting.
At this stage the programme is presented at the crèches in the informal settlements (for Grade R children) on Plot 175 and Plot 123, as well as at Leeuwfontein Primary School (Grade 1-3). Currently 275 children are enrolled. Thank you very much to the Butterfly Foundation and Beeld Children's Fund who are the main sponsors.
