Kamcare and in specific Monica Hammes (a volunteer involved with the Aftercare) identified the need to start with a reading intervention with children especially in the informal settlement at a much earlier stage to influence the children's learning experience.
Monica came across the Click Foundation and their literacy initiative using Reading Eggs, an Australian online reading programme which is used worldwide and whereby children learn to read English through a well-structured programme of lessons made up of games. Each child is individually “subscribed” and works at her/his own pace in a one-on-one setting.
The Foundation funds the subscriptions and provides support while participating schools and other groups have to provide the venue, teachers, computers and internet connectivity. At this stage the programme is presented at the crèches in the informal settlements (Grade R) on Plot 175 and Plot 111, as well as at Leeuwfontein Primary Farm School (Grade R and Grade 4). We are very happy with the 208 children that is now enrolled in this programme. Thank you very much to the Click Foundation and Beeld Children's Fund who are the main sponsors.
