Sewing Skills Training

Volunteers on this project

Every Thursday ±12 women from the community travel and walk a long way to get together at Kamcare’s sewing skills training group.  This training is presented by volunteers from the Dutch Reformed Church Kameeldrif.  After a thorough needs assessment it became clear that the women only want to make clothes for themselves.  The women enjoy this training tremendously since it is a place where they can get recognition and their self worth are increased.  The women became very close and enjoy the companionship.  Our aim is to get contracts for the women in order to earn them an income.

Two of the ladies who teach at the sewing project have this to say:

Teaching sewing to women who have never sewn or worked with a sewing machine before is an enriching experience for us.  They are all such nice friendly people and we have learned so much from them particularly about contentment despite the most needy and difficult circumstances.  -  Magriet du Preez

I look forward to Thursday mornings when I go to the sewing group. The camaraderie is wonderful. We do not always understand everything that is being said but we have noticed that the ladies work quicker the more they talk.  The atmosphere is very friendly and sometimes the concentration is so great that people are not even aware that they have begun singing or humming spontaneously. For me this a wonderful experience and an opportunity to be a tiny cog in God’s great wheel. - Rita Niewenhuis
